Tourism Board discusses Air Access Strategy 12 Mar 2010

Ray Dillon, Deputy Minister, Department of Business provided a presentation to the Newfoundland and Labrador Tourism Board on the Province’s Air Access Strategy. Open dialogue has been established between the Newfoundland and Labrador Tourism Board and Department of Business and plans for a follow up meeting are in the works. Deputy Minister Dillon has committed to presenting to the Tourism Board again in the New Year with an update.

HNL meets with Minister of State (Transport) and advocates for federal funds for Marine Atlantic 12 Mar 2010

HNL Chair, Bruce Sparkes along with other Marine Atlantic stakeholders met with the Honourable Rob Merrifield, Minister of State (Transport) responsible for Marine Atlantic today. The Minister invited stakeholder groups to deliver a short presentation on their needs and requirements for the Marine Atlantic ferry service. HNL voiced their concerns relating to fleet renewal, capacity and customer service. Feedback from Minister Merrifield indicated that he will require more support in order to move forward on the aforementioned concerns. HNL will continue to advocate on this issue and has committed to writing several other ministers to advocate for additional support on this issue.

Vehicle Rental Study Underway 12 Mar 2010

The Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation has taken the lead in addressing concerns around car rental capacity and limited ground transportation services. The study has been identified as being critical to addressing capacity/availability issues and a contract has been awarded to a team of consultants with extensive knowledge in the tourism industry. A steering committee has been established inclusive of both industry and government representatives. The steering committee will be responsible for guiding the consultants work and tracking progress. The study is expected to be completed early in 2010.

Open dialogue has been established between the Newfoundland and Labrador Tourism Board and Department of Transportation & Works – Marine Services.
