Tourism industry training report released
HNL recently released a Tourism Training Needs and Industry Engagement Assessment Report which was completed over the past several months in an effort to identify the training gaps that exist in the industry and the best ways to engage operators in skills and knowledge development.
The Tourism Training Needs and Industry Engagement outlines information on the training needs in the Newfoundland and Labrador tourism industry through a detailed assessment of training needs for the tourism industry, practical recommendations for development and delivery, ways to increase industry investment and engagement in tourism training and workforce development, funding sources for employers to utilize for workplace training, and best practices for leadership learning and development.
The report also outlines the types of programming and initiatives the industry needs to develop to become more sustainable and achieve the seven strategic directions outlined in Uncommon Potential. One of the most important conclusions in the report was that individual businesses have specific skills and knowledge requirements. To meet the needs of individual businesses, one-on-one assessments and customized plans for accessing tools and resources are required to ensure each business can develop the skills sets to match the needs of visitors.
Another important component of the Training Needs and Industry Engagement Assessment report was how the industry could adapt to the tightening labour market in Newfoundland and Labrador. It acknowledged that many tourism establishments are already having difficulty recruiting and retaining the employees necessary for sustained operations and suggests a shift towards skills development must occur to attract and develop staff.
