New Report Reveals the Economic Impact of Canada’s Parks

21 Dec 2011

The Canadian Parks Council recently released a new study highlighting the economic impact of the country’s national, provincial and territorial parks, titled The Economic Impact of Canada’s National, Provincial and Territorial Parks in 2009.

The report confirms that investments in Canada’s parks generate significant tax revenues, create jobs and support small businesses in communities from coast to coast.  Moreover, the report provides one of the first reliable estimates quantifying the economic impact of public spending on Canada’s national, provincial and territorial parks.

In 2009, public investments in Canada’s parks to the tune of $800 million were offset by more than five times that amount ($4.4 billion) in visitor spending.  Altogether, spending in Canada’s parks contributed $4.6 billion to the national GDP, created the equivalent of 64,000 jobs and generated $337.1 million in government tax revenue.
